However, asphalt driveways do last on average about 12 to 20 years depending on whether or not you have had preventative maintenance services to help them last longer. #1 Cracking
Subtle cracking will likely only require a quick fix from your local pavers. If these cracks are 1/4 inches wide or less, they can easily be repaired with a liquid crack filler. You may even be able to do this yourself if you’re used to working with paving materials and tools.
However, if your driveway has severe cracks that are wider than this, there is likely a more serious underlying problem at hand. Repairing these cracks will not only be difficult but wasted, as this underlying problem will only cause them to reappear down the line. In this case, get a paver to assess the issue and recommend the best option for it. Be prepared, though, as you may need it to be resurfaced.
#2 Potholes
Ah, the dreaded pothole. These eye-sores can ruin your vehicles’ wheels, making driving a nightmare and trips to be expected. These alone are reason enough to get repairs done immediately. However, it’s also important to note that the longer you leave your potholes, the more chaos they can cause.
They will start to collect water when it rains, allowing it to pool and seep beneath your asphalt surface and into the foundation of your driveway. This can cause it to soften, resulting in erosion and more cracking. Luckily, potholes can be patched by a paver quite easily. However, if there are multiple, deep potholes in your driveway, the entire space may need to be replaced!
#3 Staining And Fading
As your driveway will experience excessive sun exposure during summer, fading and staining are inevitable. This is especially true if the asphalt is several years old. Preventative maintenance can prevent this from occurring, but if you haven’t hired these services, then repairs will be needed. You’ll need your driveway to be professionally seal coated to fix this problem.
