Asphalt pavement installations are a complicated process, one that leaves most homeowners, commercial property owners, and municipality employees unsure of how to prepare!

That’s where C Aurora Paving Ltd comes in.

We pride ourselves on adding value to Ontario residents’ lives, educating them on the use and misuse of asphalt.

To deliver on that promise, here is the complete and correct process for installing asphalt pavements.

STEP 1: Demolition And Removal

First, the existing surface is demolished using heavy-duty machinery and excavators, including small bobcats, forklifts, front loaders, and large dump trucks.

The resulting debris is removed, creating a clean, blank canvas for your new asphalt pavement.

STEP 2: Grading And Sloping

The latest technology and tools are then used to prepare the surface to ensure water drains away from your property properly.

Otherwise, water will pool on your asphalt, damaging the asphalt over time and causing cracks, crumbling, and potholes!

The surface will be graded using laser-guided transits and automatic motor graders to create the gradient needed to allow proper water run-off.

STEP 3: Preparing The Sub Base

If you had to guess, what is the most important part of your asphalt pavement?

If you guessed asphalt – you’d be wrong.

Without a sub-base to support the new pavement, your asphalt won’t last. It also acts as a frost barrier, fighting the freezing and thawing of winter!

The sub-base will be laid, graded, and compacted to ensure the correct thickness and stability, preserving your asphalt last for years to come.

STEP 4: Proof Roll And Repair

To ensure your sub-base is ready to support new asphalt, a proof roll is used to check (the proof is in the proof roll, after all!).

A quad-axle dump truck loaded with 72,000 pounds will be driven over the surface to check for flexing gravel, or soft spots, caused by the weight.

If any soft spots are identified, undercutting is used to repair them by digging two to three feet below the surface. Then, the underlying clay or soft soil is supplemented with aggregate material for added strength and support!

STEP 5: Binder Layer Laid

A binder layer will then be laid to ensure the new asphalt adheres permanently, increasing its strength!

This layer is extremely strong and durable, as it’s comprised of large aggregate mixed with oil.

STEP 6: Install New Asphalt Surface

Now that you have the supportive surfaces a new asphalt surface needs, the top layer of fresh surface asphalt is laid.

Surface asphalt is made up of a combination of aggregate, sand, and oil, creating a smooth, strong surface of jet-black asphalt!

STEP 7: Smooth Transitions

Asphalt pavements don’t exist in a vacuum – they tend to connect to existing driveways, roadways, or parking lots.

So, they need to transition between old and new paving seamlessly!

Your paving contractor will create smooth transitions, or ‘butt joints,’ where old meets new to preserve the appeal, grading, and water run-off of your pavement.

The Final Roll

To complete the process, your new asphalt pavement is compacted and smoothed using a roller truck.

This smooths out any small bumps, creating a safe, smooth, and sustainable surface!
